Staying in Step
Galatians 5:25
If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
Walking hand in hand with your partner for life is special. You take the time to enjoy the atmosphere, the weather and your surroundings. You spend time talking and dreaming of getaways, houses and maybe even children down the line. You might reflect on the past or talk deeply about future plans. Your love for each other is strong as you take the time to walk side by side, hand in hand, step by step.
Married couples who do this, who learn to walk together, build a relationship that will last the test of time. Things will never be perfect and things will never be totally where you want them to be but being on the same page allows the marriage to stay in a place of love, peace and joy.
This image of unity and oneness is needed as we walk in step with God. We need to see ourselves capable of walking with Our Father and enjoying His presence. We need to see our relationship as co-labouring and working together. We need Him and He needs us. God is, of course, the leader in our relationship and because He knows everything we can never place ourselves forcibly into the driving seat, unless we want our lives to crash and burn. His leadership and direction is complete but it is out of our daily and growing relationship that trust is truly formed.
What is so awesome about the born-again, spirit filled life is that God’s very Spirit dwells in us. This means that we are closely and quickly connected to the wisdom, direction and vision He provides. Know this about God, He has a plan for our lives and His plan is a good one! Learning to be in step with Him, to walk with Him, to talk to Him and to listen to Him is crucial as we look to follow His plan for our lives.
Matthew 11:28-30
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
The Message Bible says it this way (paraphrasing), “learn to follow the unforced rhythms of Grace.” His burden is light and His yoke is easy and the steps of a righteous man are ordered of the Lord. Our hearts are a lamp, filled with light, to show us the pathway that is before us. No darkness can stand in the way as we are filled with the light! That light is the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, living inside us. Walking in the light of the glorious Gospel is walking in step with what God has ordained for your life!
When we learn this, all of the struggle and frustration is removed. Our faith is leaning on Him. Our faith is standing with a foundation beneath our lives that is rock solid. The faith lifestyle we lead is in step with what He has in store for our lives.
When you observe the life and ministry of Jesus you can see this principle in full operation. Whether it is Jesus stopping to see who touched Him in the crowd of people or whether it was following Him to the pool of Bethesda to heal a crippled man we see Jesus simply following what He saw His Father doing. I believe that the hours of prayer that He spent on the mountain alone, over night, walking on water to meet His disciples allowed Him to commune with God in a way that He knew what was needed to be done. Jesus was never left without instruction. He was never surprised at what was needed to be done. He had a supreme air of confidence and boldness in that as He went about doing His Father’s business He would never be left in the dark. Jesus knew He could lean on everything God has told Him to do. He could lean on what God had written in the Abrahamic Covenant and He could act on what the Spirit of God revealed to Him.
The amazing thing about Jesus’ life was that He was our example operating on the Old Covenant. He did far more than all of us combined using the law of Moses than what we achieve as sons of the living God operating on the New and Living Covenant. Our Born-Again status and our position in Heaven gives us the complete advantage. As we line our thinking, our confession and our believing up with the Word of God we can press into the Spirit and walk in step with all that God has to offer. We can turn up at the right place, right time, we can walk with favour and blessing all the days of our lives, and we can step into the completeness of God’s vision for our lives.
It takes co-operation. It takes humility and submission. It takes a willingness of us as individuals to learn the way God operates. Learn what He has said we can achieve. Learn the ways of His Spirit. It will take a boldness that comes from a relationship that is filled with consistency and trust. He is truly faithful. He is truly trustworthy! He loves you and wants you to have an amazing life filled with gifts, with joy, with life, with health and prosperity. How do you achieve all of this? By remaining in Step with The Spirit of God. Have faith in God. Trust Him and His voice on the inside of you. Stay filled up and fired up! Let the Spirit of God rise up within you and speak what He says to you! If God is talking to you…YOU CAN TRUST HIM!!
I pray that as you spend time with Him today you have the confidence to step out in total faith and follow His direction. Be bold. Be strong. The Lord God is with you!
